Car Repair

I had to have some repair work done on my truck this week. It has been skipping for a while now. I changed the fuel filter and checked the spark plugs myself, but the engine was still missing both in idle and throughout the driving range. So, I decided to take it to an auto repair shop this week. The technician had to rebuild the distributor with a new rotor, distributor cap, pick up coil, and ignition control module. So far it is running alot better. I was feeling like I might have gotten gouged on the cost until I checked the average car repair prices for the work done at RepairPal.com. According to them, it looks like my bill was about on par or below average for the work done. RepairPal.com is a pretty good website. You can check what the costs of repairs should be for your area. You can also see the different repair shops in your area and their ratings. There is also an expert advice section with information about your specific vehicle. So if you are having trouble with your vehicle, you might want to check out RepairPal.com.

Fat

I read this article and found it interesting. It was by Karen Collins, and it reads:

A new study takes the well-established link between overweight and increased risk of colon cancer one step further—suggesting that one particular type of body fat may be a major culprit.

Compared to fat around the hips and thighs, fat located around the waistline is more strongly associated with health risks like heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. However, all waistline fat may not be the same. Researchers now express much greater concern about visceral fat tissue—the fat that accumulates in and around abdominal organs such as the liver. These fat cells, according to emerging science, are likely more harmful than those found in subcutaneous fat, the fat found just under the skin.

Abdominal fatness increases risk of some cancers more than others, colon cancer in particular. A study published this March looked specifically at the link between the two types of abdominal fat and potential precancerous growths. Involving 200 men and women undergoing both a colonoscopy to screen for abnormal growths in the colon and a computed tomography scan of their abdomen and pelvis, the study separately measured the two different types of abdominal fat.

Results showed that subjects who had abnormal growths had significantly larger waists than subjects without them; however, it was visceral fat that was most strongly linked to the potentially cancerous growths. People with the most visceral fat were more than four times as likely to have growths compared to those with the least visceral fat.

Why would visceral fat pose a greater health risk than other body fat? For starters, research shows that visceral fat is directly related to inflammation throughout the body, which has been linked to cancer and heart disease. Studies suggest that visceral fat tissue contains more macrophages, a type of immune cell that produces cytokines, a hormone-like protein implicated in chronic inflammation. Cytokines may also increase cancer risk in several other ways: They can increase oxidative stress and boost free radical production (creating DNA damage which could spark cancer development) and they can disturb insulin function (impairing both sugar and fat metabolism).

The fat cells themselves secrete a variety of hormones. One called resistin impairs the action of insulin. Scientists theorize this may be part of the reason that excess body fat is associated with a condition called “insulin resistance” in which ever-higher amounts of insulin are needed to control blood sugar. These higher insulin levels may promote some types of cancer and other health problems.

Without the help of a CT scan, most of us won’t be able to tell if a growing waistline is thanks to visceral or subcutaneous fat. Instead focus on meeting current recommended guidelines for a healthy waist circumference. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, cancer risk increases at waist sizes greater than 31.5 inches for women and 37 inches for men.

In addition, maintaining a healthy weight is also essential. Some research suggests that weight loss can reduce production of inflammatory cytokines and increase expression of anti-inflammatory ones. Physical activity, which is key to weight control, may also have addition effects, including helping insulin to work more effectively.

I thought it was interesting and thought that you guys may enjoy reading it.

Diet Pills

I honestly believe the best and safest way to lose weight is proper diet and exercise; however, some people need diet pills in order to lose the first bit of weight. I know several people who have done this. They will take diet pill in order to lose 20 to 40lbs, and then they will quit the pill and just go strictly to exercise and proper diet. Even taking the diet pills, its is better to eat healthy and exercise. There is actually a site that list the top 10 diet pills. This site, consumerpricewatch.net, list the sites and gives a description of each one. It's a good idea, if you are considering taking diet pills, to visit this site. Of course, from this site you can be directed to the other sites and read in more detail about the different pills. As I said earlier, I like to promote exercise and proper diet, but, if you need diet pills, visit consumerpricewatch.net first.

Lap-Band Surgery

A friend of mine recently tried lap-band surgery. She had a lot of success. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, a lAP-band is an adjustable band that fits around the upper part of the stomach. This helps you eat less, feel full longer and lose weight. It is the safest, least invasive and only adjustable weight-loss surgery in the United States. It received FDA approval in 2001.

If you're considering this procedure, I suggest you visit newhopetoday.com. You can read about the great doctors, patients success stories, and patient support. This site has online forums. Before you try the lap band procedure, please visit this site. Lap Band surgery is not a complicated procedure, but it is not for everyone. You should be very careful and do plenty of research before actually doing it. If you are a candidate, according to testimonials, I do not think you will be displeased.

Video Games

It seems like one thing that every young person has in common these days is the love of video games. I know I loved playing them as a youngster and still enjoy the occasional gaming experience. A website that is very good for purchasing video games is GameStoreUSA. They have everything from Wii Games to PS3 Games. They carry both new and used video games. The new ones are still factory sealed in their original box, and the used games are buffed and then resealed with the case, original artwork and game manual. They have very good customer service and even have a fourteen day money back guarantee. You can even sell your old video games to them. They have reasonable shipping rates as well. Overall I thing GameStoreUSA is one of the best places to buy and sell video games online.

My wife and I have decided to try eating all organic foods. Some friends of mine have been doing it for about 4 months now, and they look and say they feel so much better. Their skin tone is great. Of course, you can't help but eat regular foods sometimes, but for the most part, we're going organic. Let me know if any of you eat all organic.

Finances

One of the things can cause weight gain is stress. One of the main causes of stress is finances. Most people have had, or are currently having, financial issues. It's hard not to with the economy like it is. It's important not to get yourself into a bad financial bind, but if you do, it's important to get out of it. To do that, one needs motivation. A good way is by blogging about it. One great blog that I've found that does that is Investing My Way to Financial Freedom. This is a day by day blog about how this author is working out of debt. If you're having financial problems, which like I mention earlier is unhealthy, you need to read this blog. It could help you.

Proper Form

There are so many people that I've seen that do not have good form in the weight room. I've noticed guys benching who are practically doing declines. They arch their back so far I'm suprised that it doesn't break. Some people overlook it, but proper form is very important when lifting weights. Not only are you NOT getting a completely successful workout, bad form can, and eventually will, lead to injuries. If you do not know proper form, I suggest you do a little research before you regret it.

Example

Please don't take what I'm about to say as being mean. I have a huge problem with parents who allow their child to eat all day and exercise none. I was recently around this. I bet this 14 yr. old weight 230lbs, and the parents were ok with it. The child is only 5'7". Now I do realize there are medical problem that can cause this, but when the parents just allow their child to hurt themselves like this, I have a problem with it. There are so many problems that are a direct result of obescity. It's, in my opinion negligence on the parents fault. The parents should set an example for their child.

Summer exercise...

Swimming is a great and enjoyable way to exercise during the hot months of summer. Swimming tones your entire body, and also is an excellent cardiovascular workout. It's a relaxing exercise that almost anyone can do, including people for whom jarring, weight-bearing activities are out of the question. It's wonderful for pregnant women in particular since swimming builds up abdominal and shoulder muscles. Water exercise can also reduce the joint stiffness, high blood pressure, and discomfort associated with pregnancy.

Anything goes...

As I mentioned in an earlier blog, I've got my horses back. I love them, but they eat like crazy. The good thing about them though is I get to do what I love to do how I love to do it. I can exercise while horseback riding.

You know the great thing about blogging is that you can write about anything and everything you want to. I recently read a blog, Nishas world of interests, that I really enjoyed. This blog had articles about baby health to celebrity gossip. It has some good reads. This blog has something for everyone.

College teens.

The following is an article that I read from MSN. Some of you may have already read it, but I found it interesting; So here it is:

College Teens Less Likely to Have Risky Sex

American teens who attend college are less likely to have risky sex than teens who aren't in college, say researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle.

They found that teen college students were more likely to always use a condom and less likely to engage in high-risk sex than teens who weren't in college, United Press International reported.

According to the study:

23 percent of teen college students and 35 percent of non-college teens reported inconsistent condom use.
15 percent of college students and 29 percent of non-college teens engaged in casual sex.
5 percent of college students and 16 percent of non-college teens had high-risk sex, which included casual sex, inconsistent condom use, having sex with a man who had sex with other men, or having a sex partner who was HIV positive or was an intravenous drug user.
53 percent of college students and 70 percent of non-college teens engaged in sex in the previous month.
